Mr. Wim Wiersma, Nederland
In 1962, I got my first Whippet from my parents. This dog was a great grandson of the then famous English champion ‘Marksman of Always’. I was 12 years old and had no idea what famous parents were in a pedigree. Thanks to the inspiration of the breeder of my dog, I developed the enthusiasm for showing Whippets, which, until today, I do that with great pleasure. Having discovered how fun it was to practice this aspect of dog sports, I also wanted to experience how to run my Whippet on the track. It was a great experience especially for the dog itself. Almost self-evident, breeding was the next step. My first litter of Whippets I bred in 1966. From 1993 I have bred twelve litters under the kennel name ‘Of Summer’s Joy’, which resulted in several National and International Champions.
Then you get to a point to take more responsibility for your breed in a different way than showing and breeding, namely judging. In 2004 I passed my exam and I was appointed by the Dutch Kennel Club “Raad van Beheer” as judge of the Whippet. In the years to follow I passed the exmans and seminar for all the Sighthounds in FCI Group 10 and the Meditarian Sighthounds in FCI group 5. So far, I have judged in Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, England, Italy and Australia.
I was a board member of the Dutch Whippet Club from 1994 to 2006 and as from 2015 I am the president of the same club. As from 2014, I am Secretary of the Kynologisch Centrum Houtrak Foundation, which is a umbrella organ of the Kynologenclub Amsterdam and the Windhonden Renvereniging Amsterdam. In addition, I contributed to the publication of the reference work ‘Dutch Whippet Champions 1950-1990’, published in an updated version in 2004 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Dutch Whippet Club.
